Our Stories

Comprehensive Asian American studies and history is rare in PreK-12 school curriculum, leaving 2.7 million Asian American students without an opportunity to learn about their identities and the history and cultures of their communities.

Offerings:

  • Chinese American Field Trips and Walking Tours for students and educators to visit Chinese American history sites can bring history to life and provide unforgettable engaging learning experiences to lift up California’s forgotten and suppressed stories.  In Northern California, tours of Oakland Chinatown, Pacific Grove / Monterey / Point Lobos, Marysville can be provided.  Field trips can be tailored for elementary, secondary or college students, as well as educators and interested residents.

  • Interactive Presentations on Asian American Movements can empower Asian American students to learn about social change struggles across the United States and key leaders who often go uncelebrated.  Topics can include resistance to the 1882 Chinese Exclusion Act and anti-Chinese movement, the founding of the term “Asian American” and the Asian American movement founded in the 1960s, Asian American struggles against labor exploitation, displacement, anti-Asian violence, and the criminal injustice system.  Overviews of South Asian American, Southeast Asian American, and Filipino American movements are available to lift up stories marginalized within Asian American studies.  Interactive presentations can be provided virtually or in-person.

  • Curriculum Frameworks and Tools for Asian American Studies courses can support schools and districts to develop localized units and lesson plans that engage all ages of students to explore their community histories, identities, and to discuss current issues such as anti-Asian hate, media stereotypes, and mental health in Asian American communities.  Similar processes for Ethnic Studies can help districts create frameworks to support educators to develop units and lesson plans with coherence and through lines across classrooms.
